Frequently asked questions

Here at The Drawing Arm we like to make the process of commissioning illustration as friendly, easy and straightforward as possible.

Here are some of the answers to questions we’re often asked – and of course if you can’t find the info you’re after here, feel free to get in touch.
What makes a commercial illustration different to a regular drawing?

While they may involve the same techniques as regular drawings (for example, pencil sketches, collage or computer graphics), commercial illustrations are created by highly skilled professionals for a particular purpose.

At The Drawing Arm, our illustrators have years of experience in interpreting and responding to commercial briefs.

That means they’re able to work within given parameters (including timelines) to create an illustration that meets the specific requirements of each client. This can involve pictorially clarifying, explaining and visually representing a scene, idea, concept or situation – it depends on the brief.

At the end of the day, every piece of commercial illustration is always done with an end goal in mind – whether it’s to create a mood, promote a product or capture the imagination in some other weird and wonderful way. They’re not just pretty pictures, they’re powerful communication tools.

How much does an illustration cost?

How long is a piece of string? This varies from brief to brief.

Our artists are professional, passionate and skilled at what they do – and our fees reflect the quality of their work. However our billing rates are both transparent and competitive.

Fees are based on the time it takes to generate an illustration and the scale of artist involvement. The usage of the illustration also comes into play; where it will appear, how many people see it and for what period of time it is in the public domain. For more information on pricing, please contact us. Alternatively, if you have a campaign budget just let us know and we’ll provide you with artist deliverables dependant on your fee.

What type of clients do you work with?

All sorts! We’ve never had a preconceived idea about the type of clients we want to work with – our focus is always on the work and assignment at hand. We work with clients that want to manage direct liaison with artist and others that prefer us to manage briefing, creative amends and final supply.

Basically, we’re pretty flexible – our goal is simply to help out however we can and make sure it’s an enjoyable process for client and artist!

Why use a Scribe for a workshop or conference?

Having the information/topics being discussed visible at one glance makes it easier to understand how different aspects interrelate. You can literally SEE the concept you are discussing. It has been repeatedly scientifically proven that what we retain visually is far greater than anything read or heard, so this becomes an incredibly powerful tool.

Through live drawing (graphic facilitation) we enable organisations of all shapes and sizes to define and share ideas, tell stories, get teams on the same page and engage/target new audiences in memorable ways.

Graphic facilitation is a dynamic and memorable method of documenting events — as they happen. If you’re organising an event, large or small, and you’re looking for new ways to engage and collaborate with your audience/team, we recommend recruiting one of our highly skilled artists to assist, as it is an immediate way of communicating and giving everyone in the room a sense that they are contributing to the same vision.

How do you begin a project?

Thorough preparation and clear communication are fundamental to the commercial illustration process. For this reason, research and development is always the starting point for any of our artists. We consider it part of our work to question and challenge expectations and opinions about any given brief, as to ensure that everything has been thought through, before the detailed design work begins – whether that’s at the agency or in our studio.

Where is illustration used?

Look around. Illustration is everywhere!

It can be decorated text, a design or repeat pattern you wear, the cover of your favourite CD, packaging, the picture ‘illustrating’ the article you are reading in a magazine, a feature in advertising material and so much more…

Do you help with print supply and additional design elements?

Yep, we certainly can. The Drawing Arm shares studio space with The National Grid Design Distillery, so we have an in-house team of design experts on call. We can assist artists with finished creative, photoshop adjustments and final treatments before supplying as print ready or suitable digital files – in fact we can even create and supply additional graphics to compliment illustrations. These extended design capabilities are often handy when our clients don’t have the resources or time to do this type of work themselves.

How much experience do The Drawing Arm illustrators have?

The Drawing Arm illustrators have between five and 20 years of commercial illustrating experience and a proven ability to deliver a commercial brief on time and on budget.

Why use our illustrators?

Each of our illustrators has a unique vision and style somewhere between traditional fine art and contemporary illustration.

From budding talents to established names, The Drawing Arm illustrators are all utterly capable professionals with solid commercial experience.

We offer the best of both worlds – talent you can be inspired by, quality you can trust.
